In 1969, Germany’s party king and “Mr Easy Listening”, James Last recorded an elaborately produced record in Hamburg, aimed specifically at his American audience. The album, however, was never released and, until now, all James Last fans have considered it something of a mystery.\r
\r
The reason why this artistically ambitious pop and rock-oriented production disappeared into the archives is unclear – perhaps there was concern at the time that the extravagant arrangements and track selection of material by Bob Dylan, The Byrds and other American artists didn’t sit well with the James’ more traditional audience? We’ll never know but listening to the album today, almost 45 years later, it’s clear that it was very ahead of its time.\r
\r
As well as Bob Dylan and The Byrds, The America Album features compositions by Jimmy Webb, Laura Nyro and Leiber & Stoller alonside some of Last’s own compositions. Some of the titles could later be found in shortened and altered forms on other James Last LPs, but this is the worldwide premiere of The America Album in its entirety.\r
